Sixteen Upper School students and faculty members, Dr. Jason Schipper and Mrs. Julie Scheidegger, traveled to The Hague, Netherlands, to participate in the 58th Annual The Hague Model United Nations Conference. Held from January 26-30 at The World Forum Conference Center, THIMUN is the largest MUN conference in the world, with over 3500 secondary school participants from 164 schools from around the world. Participants explored various world issues and devised solutions through discussion, negotiation, and debate.

The Saint Andrew’s Model UN Team represented the Delegations of Brunei Darussalam and The Human Rights Watch. Students simulated roles as delegates to the UN General Assembly, the Human Rights Commission, the Environment Commission, the Sustainable Development Commission, and the Cultural Heritage Sub-Commission. Impressively, every Saint Andrew’s delegate was a Main Submitter or Sponsor on an approved resolution in their respective committees. These approved resolutions were then presented to the actual United Nations, where they are debated and discussed. The SA Model UN Team had one of the best performances of any school at THIMUN and has certainly built a reputation for success at the conference.

In addition to exploring local sights and attractions in The Hague, before the conference began, the SA MUN Team traveled to Amsterdam for two days and were able to tour the Rijkmuseum and Van Gogh Museum, participate in a StroopWafel cooking class, tour the Anne Frank House Museum, explore the city center, and feed Alpacas at an Alpaca Farm in the Dutch countryside.

Throughout the trip, the SA MUN participants continued to share their thoughts on what an incredibly social, educational, and cultural experience it was.
