This past Saturday, October 19, 44 Upper School students gathered on campus in the Dr. Albert C. Cohen Center for Entrepreneurial Studies to participate in the first Saint Andrew’s Model UN Conference. Organized by the Saint Andrew’s Model United Nations Team, participants explored various historical and current world issues and devised solutions through discussion, negotiation, and debate.
Students simulated roles as delegates on two General Assembly committees. One focused on Income Inequality issues throughout the world, while the other focused on the Influence of Technology on Modern War and Conflict. The Saint Andrew’s Model UN Team was assigned various delegations to the General Assembly, and individual students represented the likes of India, Russia, Ghana, China, Turkey, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Canada, Thailand, and many more. There was also a historical crisis committee simulation in which students assumed roles of historical figures and attempted to negotiate and solve the Korean War of 1950-1953. Students on the Crisis Committees simulated persons such as Harry Truman, Gen. Douglas MacArthur, Joseph Stalin, Mao Zedong, Kim Il Sung, and various others. In addition to our delegates’ roles, several SA MUN Team Members served in the prestigious roles of Committee Chairs for both the General Assemblies and Crisis Committees.
This was their first in-person MUN Conference on campus. By the end of the day, both General Assemblies created and passed two full resolutions pertaining to their issues. And the Crisis Committees ended with both North and South Korea agreeing to a peace treaty. Overall, all the SA Model United Nations Conference participants did amazing! And an extra special congratulations goes to Sofia Olson ’26, Naomi Williams ’25, Ella Hammer ’25, and Kiley Dahl ’27 for winning individual awards as Best Delegates.
