IB Biology Students Explore the Future of Biotech at Pherros Biosciences

Saint Andrew’s IB Biology cohort in PPE with Pherros CEO Dr. Kevin Malek

The Saint Andrew’s IB Biology cohort had the unique opportunity to participate in a behind-the-scenes tour of the state-of-the-art Pherros Biosciences facility in Deerfield Beach. The visit was led by the company’s CEO, Dr. Kevin Malek P’34, ’35.

Students donned personal protective equipment (PPE) before touring several clean research and development spaces, including areas where Pherros will soon begin pharmaceutical manufacturing. Throughout the visit, Dr. Malek guided the group through the complex process of developing and producing medications, emphasizing the rigorous steps required to ensure safety and efficacy. He also connected these real-world applications to the advanced concepts currently being studied in the IB Biology program, offering valuable insight into potential pathways in scientific research and future careers in the field.

"Being able to take high-achieving students to a top-notch facility, where they can see the importance of a strong foundation in Biology, Chemistry, and engineering, is a valuable part of both the IB and SA experience,” stated Upper School science teacher Vincent Campanaro.  “Having Dr. Malek guide us through the entire facility was a great opportunity for the students to envision where their studies and research could lead them in the future."

This experience serves as a clear example of the purposeful, hands-on learning that defines the Saint Andrew’s curriculum. By stepping out of the classroom and into a professional lab, these students had the opportunity to see firsthand how academic theory translates into the innovations of tomorrow. The visit provided an invaluable bridge between the classroom and the professional scientific community, further inspiring the next generation of researchers and leaders.
