The Category 5 STEM Challenge

Middle school boys react to a science project involving a leaf blower.

In Mr. Bello's Grade 7 science class, students have been learning about how scientists incorporate the Design Cycle in everyday jobs.

With the state of Florida in the middle of Hurricane Season, students have been researching how houses are designed to withstand these strong winds and rain.

Student teams designed and then built a mini hurricane house to see if it could withstand wind generated from a leaf blower. The test started at Category 1, which is 15 feet from the house. If the house lasted 5 seconds, Mr. Bello took one step closer to reach Category 2. This continued until the house was blown off the foundation or reached Category 5. One of the houses in this class made it to 4.5!

It was a great hands-on building experience that tested students' knowledge and creativity!
