SA Students Speak Up at City Council Meeting for Special Needs Student Athletes

Chis and Delaney at Boca Raton Chamber

Last week, Delaney Beighley '25 and Chris D’Angelo '26, from Athletes Without Limits, were invited by Deputy Mayor Monica Mayotte to speak to the Boca Raton City Council.

They were invited to speak because Delaney and Chris believe there is a need for more indoor recreation space in Boca. Delaney and Chris work with sports leagues for special needs students and noticed the need.

Delaney told the council, “Having worked with (these children), I’ve noticed the need for more gym space; they turn down people and have a waitlist.” Chris highlighted the economic impact that a larger sports facility could have but also relayed his personal experience, “My older brother has autism, and I’ve tried to get him involved with some local programs, but he wasn’t able to join because they don’t have enough gym space.”

Councilman Marc Wigder commended Delaney and Chris for their efforts, saying, “thank you for your advocacy of people who cannot advocate for themselves.” He then asked, “in a perfect world, what would success look like to you?” Chris responded, “For everyone to have the chance to play and the time to practice. Teams need more space to do that.” Delaney responded, “A multi-sport complex would help not only all sports but also all sports for the abled and disabled.”

Mayor Scott Singer concluded the presentation by saying, “Thank you again. We often have advocates coming in for more indoor field space, and you are the youngest ones, which is great.”
