Pickled Fractions with Grade 4

In Ms. Hake's grade 4 Accelerated Math class the students are currently learning about adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators.

On Friday, January 17, the students participated in a pickleball activity where the students kept points, but rather than getting 1 point each time they scored they got a fraction of a point. To determine their points, they rolled a dice twice, so for one score, they may have gotten 1/6 of a point or 2/5 of a point. At the end of their match, they added up all of their points, working on adding mixed numbers and fractions with unlike denominators. They then answered word problems about their pickleball game, practicing adding and subtracting mixed numbers.

What a fun way to practice and review fraction skills!

Below are a few photos of the students taking part in the pickleball activity.
