Movin' and Groovin' in IB Economics

IB Economics

IB Economics-Standard Level is an advanced one-year course offered to students in grades 11 and 12.

According to the instructor, Dr. Jason Schipper, the course content and assessments can be pretty complex and intense.

“Topics like cost-push inflation, long-run aggregate supply, cyclical unemployment, etc., can all be pretty confusing to a high school student.”

Nevertheless, Dr. Schipper noticed that there were overarching concepts that were constantly revisited and addressed throughout the course content, which students needed to master. But how do you help students easily memorize these complex concepts?

“I started to think very basic and realized that in elementary school lessons, a common practice is incorporating motions and movements to help memorize words, concepts, or ideas. So I started doing this, and the high school students loved it!”

Dr. Schipper says he saw an immediate improvement in assessment scores and the students were able to demonstrate mastery of the concepts quicker than students taught in previous years. He now uses this technique to also help the students learn to draw different supply and demand diagrams.

“I have seen students in the middle of a test extend their arms and do the motions to help activate their memory of a specific diagram. It was pretty great to see!”
