This week, during assembly, six students and one faculty member were selected by the grade-level teams for being those who embody the IB Learner Profile attribute of Knowledgeable.

Grade 6:

Owen Halsey: Owen demonstrates strong conceptual understanding by exploring the world with curiosity and confidence. During our visit to the zoo, he impressed the guides by identifying animals and sharing facts on his own—so much so that he was even called a “naturalist” and offered a spot as a helper. Owen's ability to observe, connect ideas, and engage with real-world knowledge shows a true passion for learning across disciplines.

Ethan Schmidt: Ethan consistently seeks a deeper understanding across a range of subjects. On our visits to the Frost Museum and the Kennedy Space Center, he asked thoughtful questions, shared knowledge he had learned, and made meaningful connections to new information. Ethan's strong performance in the classroom shows determination, curiosity, and a commitment to learning that extends beyond any one subject.

Grade 7:

Daniel Munoz Gregori: With curiosity and determination at the center of his learning, Dani embodies the Knowledgeable profile. He engaged deeply with challenging concepts, persisting with the Pythagorean Theorem when others moved on and applying it meaningfully to real-world situations like a baseball diamond. His eagerness to learn extends beyond the classroom as well, asking thoughtful questions and seeking deeper understanding during experiences such as the manatee snorkeling trip. Warm, motivated, and intellectually engaged, Dani shows a genuine commitment to expanding his knowledge across disciplines.

Julianna Unkel: Julianna shows the heart of a Knowledgeable learner through her curiosity, insight, and strong command of the subjects and activities she engages in. As an athlete, she communicates clearly and understands the game of basketball with impressive depth, demonstrating both skill and awareness. In the classroom, she pushes herself to investigate ideas more deeply and often applies her thinking in creative, unexpected ways. Even as a seventh grader among mostly eighth graders, Julianna holds her own, showing a commitment to growth that stands out in meaningful ways.

Grade 8:

José Padua (Tiago): Tiago demonstrates exceptional strength in technology, engineering, and science while also excelling in multiple languages. His strong performance across all subjects further highlights his broad intellectual range, but it is his passion for exploring how things work—and why—that truly sets him apart. Tiago engages deeply with complex ideas, showing a curiosity and conceptual understanding that embody what it means to be knowledgeable.

Kathryn Anglemyer: Kathryn is an insightful and deeply engaged learner who consistently demonstrates passion and enthusiasm for learning across disciplines. She approaches every subject with genuine curiosity, thoughtful analysis, and a desire to understand ideas at a meaningful level. Kathryn's ability to make sophisticated connections—often beyond what is expected at this age—shows a maturity and depth of understanding that exemplify the knowledgeable learner

Faculty

Jack Herr: This award recognizes an individual whose insatiable curiosity and vast breadth of knowledge perfectly embody the IB Learner Profile trait of being Knowledgeable. The volume of information Mr. Herr possesses is remarkable, spanning far beyond his academic discipline to include expertise in areas like baking, gardening, and DIY projects. Conversations with Mr. Herr are always intellectually stimulating, touching on diverse subjects from global investments to early Hominin discoveries, ensuring everyone leaves with a new, mind-expanding fact. Crucially, this depth of understanding is expertly used to inspire students, connecting his interests to larger global contexts and making learning fun, approachable, and truly relevant.
