Middle School Field Trip to Mariani Hall

MS students in Mariani Hall with Eric Morales

Students in Ms. Prieto's science class are learning about biomolecules, the most essential organic molecules needed to survive. Nutrition is closely linked to the study of biomolecules because we take in these molecules in the foods we eat. The carbohydrates, proteins, and fats we eat create the building blocks for the biomolecules found in our bodies. Students have been creating menus and learning about different nutrients found in the foods they consume.

To see how these lessons can be applied outside of class, Ms. Prieto set up field trips to Mariani Hall for the grade 8 students to meet with Eric Morales, the general manager of SAGE Dining Services at Saint Andrew's. Mr. Morales creates the menus for all the students, faculty, and staff at Saint Andrew's seven days a week.

Mr. Morales gave the students a tour of the dining hall and kitchen and taught them about what it is like to work in the food industry. The students had a great time seeing the kitchen staff at work, learning about the different machines used to make the food on campus, and walking in and out of the refrigerators and, of course, the freezer.
