Marc Caputo, senior writer for The Bulwark, visited with Upper School students at Saint Andrew’s on Friday, October 4, to discuss the role of the media during elections.

Caputo started his visit by meeting with students taking AP US Government and Sports Broadcasting along with staff members of the Bagpiper in Cohen Auditorium. He spoke about his background as a political reporter in print, TV, and online journalism. He talked about how journalism has changed over his twenty-six-year career and the influence of social media in today’s world, particularly its impact on elections. He also discussed his experience covering Florida politics and national elections over the past few election cycles.

During the Upper School assembly, he spoke about the impact of social media on elections and election coverage. He described how information is harvested from cell phones and used to influence decisions about everything from consumer choices to voting. With the goal of increasing student consciousness about the decisions they make, Caputo provided valuable insight into the world of contemporary politics and political reporting.

Caputo ended his day at Saint Andrew’s by having lunch in Mariani Great Hall with the WSAS and Sports Broadcasting students. These students had the opportunity to ask more questions about Caputo’s experience and get advice about working in journalism.
