Linguistics Class and the Meaning of Language

Joshua Clements with Dr. Anthony's Linguistics Class

Mr. Joshua Clements, who manages the Tutoring Center and teaches communication courses at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC), joined Dr. Elle Anthony's Linguistics class to discuss the meaning of language as an instrument of communication.

Mr. Clements earned a B.S. in Writing and Communication from ABAC, and an M.A. in Communication from Valdosta State University. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Rhetoric at Duquesne University. He has also traveled extensively and studied languages in other countries.

Mr. Clements helped students grasp the idea that language evolves, and grammar is relative to current usage. He also shared how life-changing learning about the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis was for him. He closed by highlighting the importance of learning languages as a way to share culture and see the world differently.

We are thankful that Mr. Clements could spend some time with our Linguistics students who were impressed with his knowledge and how he could relate the content of the class to our everyday life.
