IB Spanish Explores the Works of a Renowned Poet

Saint Andrew's IB Spanish students writing on board.

In our IB Spanish Higher Level class, students are delving into the first of two literary works originally written in Spanish. This year, they’re using Cuba as a lens to explore Spanish-speaking communities, focusing on the works of José Martí—a Cuban poet, philosopher, and symbol of the nation’s independence. As part of their preparation, each student selected and analyzed a Martí poem, guided by prompts to deepen their understanding. They collaborated in pairs in class, engaging with poems chosen by their peers rather than their own. This approach encouraged dynamic exchanges and fostered a deeper appreciation for Martí’s works while celebrating each student's unique perspectives and skills in this scholarly community.
