Hip Hopping Around

African American History and Literature class learning hip hop at Saint Andrew's School

Mr. Josh Borthwick’s African American History and Literature class met in the Black Box Theater for an interdisciplinary lesson led by Ms. Rebecca Leslie on the rise of hip-hop dance as a powerful form of cultural expression. The dance class built upon the class’s recent unit on the Civil Rights Movement. Some of the dances that were taught by Ms. Leslie included the Electric Slide, the Typewriter, the Reebok, and the Wobble. Mr. Borthwick and the students had a great time learning new dance moves while also improving upon ones they already knew. The students who take this course have to write a research paper at the end of the semester, and hip hop can be one of their topics.
