Ms. Bohl-Ledesma had a special guest, Dr. Nestor Concha, speak to her AP Biology class about the application of structural biology as it relates to drug discovery. Dr. Concha holds a doctorate in physiology from Boston University School of Medicine and recently retired from working for Glaxo Smith and Klein. While at GSK, he was part of the structural biology group and participated in many drug discovery projects, including one approved by the FDA in 2022 for treating anemia.
He spoke to the students about pharmaceutical-related topics, including the impressive strides being made in the discovery of cures for HIV-1/AIDS, Sickle-cell anemia, Cystic fibrosis, and cancer immune therapy.
