Students in Mrs. Wolf's Grade 9 College Prep English Classes explore the beginning pages of Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis through small group discussion and writing about the graphic novel's representation of the Iranian Revolution. After sharing their thoughts on several subtopics aloud in small groups, students select one question to respond to in writing. Mrs. Wolf and the other Grade 9 teachers continue to develop students' writing skills in Semester 2, and this specific lesson continues building upon the skill of crafting a strong claim: one that is arguable, specific, and able to be supported by evidence from a text.
