Grade 8 Students Explore Marine Ecology with Alumnus Guest Speaker

alumnus Frankie Gorora '12 speaking to saint andrew's middle school students

On May 15 and 16, grade 8 students had the opportunity to hear from environmentalist and school alumnus Frankie Gorora '12. Frankie is currently working as a research technician with the Reynolds Coastal and Marine Ecology Lab at the University of Florida.

His work focuses on the seagrass beds of Florida—an essential part of the coastal ecosystem. During his visit, Frankie shared insights into the critical role that seagrasses play in supporting marine life and maintaining the health of Florida’s coastal environment. He also introduced students to the genetics of seagrasses, including research into strains that are more resilient to environmental change.

Students learned key ecological concepts such as resistance and resilience, and how these factors contribute to the stability of marine ecosystems. Frankie also highlighted the various species that depend on seagrass habitats and emphasized that as Floridians, we all have a role to play in protecting and sustaining these vital ecosystems
