Grade 7 Advanced Literature and Composition Discussion

Saint Andrew's middle school english class discussion.

Advanced Literature and Composition 7 students participated in an engaging and thought-provoking activity comparing their summer reading text, The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart, to Kurt Vonnegut's short story "Harrison Bergeron." They began by analyzing both texts, focusing on key elements like character motivation, conflicts, identity, and the role of technology in each story. The students then participated in a Socratic seminar, which allowed them to lead a more organic conversation without relying on the teacher's direction. They were permitted to utilize thoughtful, pre-researched answers, but they also were able to think critically to respectfully respond to their peers in the moment. Students were able to listen to one another, learn from each other, and even engage in some civil debate! The students demonstrated impressive critical thinking skills, collaboration, and maturity—an excellent start to the year’s academic discussions!
