Grade 6 Dives Into Mesopotamian History Through Fun Activities

Grade 6 Saint Andrew's Students teaching Grade 5 students

Grade 6 students in Mrs. Yash's World Cultures class have been busy learning about the five different Mesopotamian societies – Sumerians, Akkadians, Babylonians, Assyrians, and Neo-Babylonians.

When Mrs. Yash could not find a museum nearby with a Mesopotamia exhibit, she decided that her class could create their own! Each student chose a Mesopotamian artifact to recreate for the museum. Artifacts included cuneiform tablets, jewelry, ceremonial sickle swords, artistic panels decorated with Mushhushshu dragons, and frog-shaped weights.

Prior to the opening of their museum, the students had the chance to virtually visit with Harvard graduate students pursuing PhDs in archaeology. The students were able to ask questions about the work the PhD students were doing and learn more about what it is like to be an archeologist.

On Thursday, November 14, the Mesopotamian Museum was officially opened in Assaf Hall. When grade 5 students visited the museum, grade 6 students answered their questions and taught them more about the history of the Akkadians, Babylonians, Neo-Babylonians, and Sumerians. We love it when Scots teach Scots!

All of these experiences have helped grade 6 students to become more engaged and excited about learning about ancient cultures.
