AP US History Students in Action

US History Students in class

AP US History students developed a Human Bar Graph by "voting with their feet" to illustrate their stance in response to this guiding question:

To what extent had the colonists developed a sense of their identity and unity as Americans by the eve of the Revolution?

In this activity, #1 represented completely American, and #5 represented completely British.

To effectively address the complexity of this question, students developed a new Human Bar Graph for each of the analytical themes that guide our study, evaluating the question with respect to political systems, economic systems, social systems, etc. While standing by their respective number, students justified their viewpoints with supporting evidence and tried to persuade classmates to move to their numbers. After this activity, with a refined sense of the subtleties, students voted on each category to develop a class average on a scale from 1-5.
