Freshman Grade Level Planning

Freshman year    Sophomore year     Junior year     Senior year

FALL (first semester)
  • Be involved in the Saint Andrew's School community and explore extracurricular activities.
  • Communicate with your Grade Level Chair to set your academic goals.
  • Start building a resume. Keep a record of your activities, leadership roles, community service, honors, awards and summer experiences or jobs.
  • You will take a practice PSAT in October.
  • Attend extra help sessions and exam study groups to maximize the results of your first semester. Remember that you begin to build your record for college admission in your freshman year.
SPRING (second semester)
  • Speak with your Grade Level Chair about your first semester and see what changes, if any, need to be made to your schedule to optimize your academic experience.
  • Research opportunities for summer programs, jobs and volunteer work. Do something that you enjoy and, most importantly, defines what you are about.
  • During this semester you will request your course load for sophomore year. Try and take the most challenging courses that you can handle. Speak with your teachers and Grade Level Chair to help you determine your limits.
SUMMER
  • Get your summer reading started in a timely fashion. You've worked hard to establish yourself as an Upper School student at Saint Andrew's; do not let procrastination become a problem now.

Tips and Mantras for freshmen:
  • Be involved in things you like. Don't join a club or a sport because you think it will "look good" on your application. Join something because you genuinely have an interest in it.
  • Tests matter, but you do not have to worry about them or focus too hard on them. Wait until your junior year. For now, focus on your academic, extracurricular, and service endeavors.
