Student Leadership Retreat and Institute
To dream anything that you want to dream. That's the beauty of the human mind. To do anything that you want to do. That is the strength of the human will. To trust yourself to test your limits. That is the courage to succeed.
- Bernard Edmonds
A few leaders may be born, but all leaders develop skills through experience. Twice a year students have the opportunity learn more about Leadership as a co-curriculum.
In the fall, students who are part of the leadership teams of various student organizations, associations, boards, and councils take part in the September Leadership Retreat. Here student-leaders explore elements of fostering, managing, and organizing relationships for a year-long journey in their positions in Student Life. Each year the theme changes and the subject matter may vary, but overall the student leaders bond and realize they have a network of support during the course of the year.
In the spring, students interested in taking on leadership roles, are welcomed to attend the March Leadership Institute. Herein new and seasoned student-leaders interact and collaborate to address areas they feel can be improved upon or perpetuated in new ways. Seminar style at times and interactive at others, the workshops afford the students a chance to collaborate using entrepreneurial techniques and explore the nature of servant-leadership.
At both events students build camaraderie, deepen their understanding of their roles (present and future), and engage in activities, excursions, and/or workshops that elicit introspective considerations of themes in leadership, such as motivation, strategic planning, collaboration, and service.
