Saint Andrew's Squash on the Road to Victory in 2023

Our SAS squash team started 2023 literally on the fly with eight of our talented players traveling with coach Wael El Hindi to St. Louis to compete against six high school teams. Yassin Emara '23,  Charlie Pizzuti '23, Adam Elkaloubi '24, Alex Arader '24, Ty Green '24, Raya Singh '24, Philip Dartnell '25 and Lars Gertsen '27 won every match. The Scots were down two key teammates, but demonstrated their outstanding abilities and grit. Schools competing were the John Burroughs School, the Mary Institute @ St. Louis Country Day School (MICDS) and the McCallie High School. Congratulations on bringing home the Championship Title!

Meanwhile, Alexander Dartnell '25 and Ewan Harris '24 traveled across the pond to represent Team USA and Team Canada at the British Junior Open Squash Championship in Birmingham, England. Over 1,000 of the best players in the world competed at the highest level in junior squash. Delegations from the British Isles, Europe, Egypt, Pakistan, India, Malaysia represented their countries with pride and purpose. Everyone was out to have fun, but mostly they were there to win.

Alexander Dartnell exceeded all expectations, beating the #2 seed from Egypt in the third round in 5 games.  After two more exciting victories over a top Malaysian player and another tough Egyptian, Alexander secured his coveted spot in the semifinals. In the playoffs for 3rd/ 4th place, Alexander narrowly lost to a South Korean. Alexander won 4th place in the ultra-competitive Boys Under 17 Division in the most prestigious and competitive international tournament in junior squash.

Ewan Harris racked up a fantastic accomplishment by winning the Canadian Open in December.  He then competed in the US Open in Philadelphia before traveling to Birmingham, England on New Year's Day to represent Canada at the British Junior Open.  Ewan finished 35th among Boys Under 19, beating the #8 from England, only to face the UK's #7 shortly afterwards.

Congratulations to the Saint Andrew's squash team for their decisive win in Saint Louis and to Alexander Dartnell and Ewan Harris on their phenomenal showings at the highest levels in international squash!

Next up will be another series of squash matches in Greenwich, Connecticut in February.  GO SCOTS!
