Saint Andrew’s alum Brad McCall ’93, has never been one to be in the spotlight.
But for this auto racer whose life has been about literal twists and turns on the track, McCall is about to meet up with a sharp turn—toward celebrity.
McCall, his father Buz McCall, and their Hagerty Motorsports team Round 3 Racing (R3R) are the stars of MotorTrend TV’s ”The Drive Within,” which premieres Friday, November 12 at 6:00 pm EST. McCall, a former SA double athlete, said he is both “thrilled and nervous” about being featured on the sports show.
“I never had a desire to be famous or to be a public figure,” said McCall, from his Boca Raton home. “From that standpoint, I'm a bit nervous. But to share my passion for racing with the world and see myself on a TV show is certainly exciting.”
According to Racer magazine, McCall’s team has distinguished itself from the competition with a high level of both preparation and performance as well as for efforts to promote diversity in a traditionally male-driven sport—four of the drivers on the 2021 roster are women.
And he said he has three great reasons to continue to focus on making sure the auto racing industry reflects gender diversity.
“As a father of three girls, I want to be a good example for my daughters,” said McCall. “When we partnered with the group Shift Up Now, we embraced the idea that men and women work together in all industries. So, they should compete and participate together in Motorsports as well. The women who race on our team all have tremendous talent behind the wheel.”
Saint Andrew’s Alumni Development Officer Victor Agapay ’02, said the SA community can’t wait to check out McCall’s TV series. “We are so proud of Brad, who is not only part of our SA community, but also our neighbor, as a Boca native,” said Agapay. “Brad and Buz’s hard work and success are sure to inspire us all.”
And, as many SA alum success stories go, McCall’s passion for motorsports has an SA connection. Although he has been in the world of racing his whole life, he didn’t start racing until he and fellow SA alum Casey Gunnell ’93 started their own team in 2012. McCall said his work has grown exponentially since then.
“To have our team as the focus of a production like this with MotorTrend is an honor and truly amazing experience,” McCall told Racer. “Every weekend is something different, and WRL (World Racing League) provides close racing that makes for a great show. The Round 3 Racing team is excited to show the world what we do every weekend and hopefully, we can spread our love for racing and the Hagerty spirit to those watching.”
