The Saint Andrew’s Senior Swimmers and Divers set the tone early and often as they led the way to three more team wins over Saint John Paul II, FAU High and Saint Edward’s of Vero Beach. Nine seniors were recognized and every one of them had a taste of victory one more time at the Duff.
Leading the way for the girls were two senior double winners; Nicole Aguilar, taking the 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yd breast, and Ella Martinez, winning both the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke. Both girls have recently made their collegiate commitments with Nicole joining the University at Buffalo and Ella selecting Cornell University. Two other SA senior girls captured individual victories for the home team as Nicole Casariego won the 50-yard freestyle and Maria “Lili” de Moraes touched first in the 100-yard freestyle event.
In addition to the great individual performances, our girls team swept all three relay events with a quartet of seniors comprising each squad. In the medley race, it was Nicole C. and Nicole A. teaming with fellow seniors Madelyn Rippo and Camila Herrejon Pedraza to win the meet opener. In closing the meet Nicole A., “Lili”, Madelyn, and Ella crushed the field to leave their mark on the meet. However, one of the most exciting races of the evening was the girls 200-yard freestyle relay win that featured seniors Ella, Nicole C., “Lili” and a surprise anchor leg by senior diver Ashley Kelly. Fresh out of the 1-meter diving competition where she finished runner-up to junior teammate Kaeden Dunham, Ashley held off two charging swimmers to secure the victory for the Scots. This season marks Ashley’s thirteenth consecutive year of aquatic contributions on campus as the lifer first joined our club’s competitive team in her Kindergarten year!
For the boys, two double winners emerged and one of them was senior Kacper Rafal who dominated the field in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard breaststroke, along with junior Valerio Bonuglia, who took the 200-yard free and the 100-yard fly. Other individual winners for the boys team included: Mario Suarez (200 IM), Ambrus Barcak (100 Back), Jake Venezia (500 Free), Oliver Dunham (1-meter diving) and Diego Balbi (100 Free). Kacper teamed with fellow senior Ishan Roy to bring home wins in both of the 200-yard relay events, taking the Medley by teaming with Valerio and Diego Balbi and the freestyle by joining Valerio and Matt Aronsohn. The final event of the night, the boys 400-yard freestyle relay was won by the Scots Team of Jake Venezia, Jihwan Kim, Santi Ordonez and Ambrus Barcak.
The Scots will conclude their dual meet season this Friday night in Ft. Lauderdale against longtime rivals Pine Crest and then will host the 1A District 10 Championship Meet at home on Thursday, the 21st of October to kick off the State Series.
