The Bagpiper Earns FSPA Gold

Saint Andrew’s celebrates the Upper School newsmagazine the Bagpiper for earning a Gold rating at this year’s FSPA Convention. The Bagpiper is a 40-year plus publication at Saint Andrew’s School.

The Florida Scholastic Press Association (FSPA) is an organization that supports and assesses school publications. In order to earn an FSPA Gold rating, a student publication must score high in five major categories: coverage, content, and reporting; writing and editing; layout and design; photography and visuals; and law, ethics, and leadership.

A Gold publication covers all areas of school life broadly and deeply. Writing is clear, concise, coherent, and complete, and design elements include pages that are clean, uncluttered and that enhance the content with creative and informative graphics. Additionally, Gold publications achieve high marks in photography and other visual elements and follow the ethics of professional journalism.
The Bagpiper is produced by a very small staff of only 18 students under the direction of Faculty Advisor, Emily Faber.

“Despite the small size of its staff, it competes at the highest levels against schools with programs that have students numbering in the 100s. This is impressive on its own,” offered Preston Payne, English Department Chair. “Then, to learn that only eight publications in the entire state earned a Gold Award is to be doubly impressed,” she added.

The Bagpiper staff is enjoying a second year in a row in the achievement of prestigious honors. Last year, the Bagpiper won Third Place in the Social Media Category of the 2020 Excellence in High School Journalism Awards. "The Bagpiper staff works tirelessly to produce the newsmagazine and to run our @sabagpiper Instagram account. I'm thrilled that we have reached our goal of being a Gold-rated FSPA publication and hope to continue this level of excellence into future years!" said Mrs. Faber.
This year, SA wishes to congratulate Mrs. Faber as well as the following Bagpiper journalists and editors for their tireless efforts in achieving Gold in 2021:
