Aspen Gersper '24 Named Swimmer of the Year

As seen in the Sun-Sentinel by Gary Curreri (January 16, 2021):

Aspen Gersper was confident going into this year’s Class 2A state championship swim meet at the Sailfish Splashpark Aquatic Athletics Center in Stuart.

“I kept telling myself that I was going to win,” said Gersper, who sprained her ankle prior to the district meet last year and was hobbled through the rest of the state series. “I was looking at the [qualifying] times and I was so motivated. With COVID and everything else we have been going through, this year I wanted to go all out.”
“I was just trying to stay positive,” said the St. Andrew’s freshman, who won the 100-yard butterfly with an All-American consideration time of 54.51 and the 100 back (54.28) with an automatic All-American time. Both were PRs. “It was super cool to win both events this year. I saw my name on the scoreboard and got super excited.” Read more...

The Scots had another strong showing at the State Swimming and Diving Championships with Coach Sid Cassidy being named the Girls Swimming Coach of the Year and multiple first team honors for both the boys and girls.

Individual first team honors for the girls went to Nicole Aguilar, Ella Martinez, Erin Miller, Lucy Miller and Stella Urness. The girls also dominated in the state series with three relays being named to the All-County First Team. The relays receiving honors included the 200-yard medley relay (Ella Martinez, Lucy Miller, Nicole Aguilar, Stella Urness), the 200-yard freestyle relay (Aspen Gersper, Stella Urness, Lucy Miller, Erin Miller), and the 400-yard freestyle relay (Aspen Gersper, Nicole Aguilar, Ella Martinez, Erin MIller).

The boys did not disappoint in the state series and were also recognized with individual honors for Diego Balbi, Ryan Nordheim, and Tiago Pereira making All-County first team. The boys 200-yard freestyle relay comprised of Tiago Pereira, Ryan Nordheim, Ishan Roy, and Kacper Rafal also received first team All-County honors.

Congratulations Aspen, Coach Cassidy, and to all of the varsity swimmers and divers on another outstanding year. Go Scots!
