Boys Basketball Looks to Go Back-to-Back

After a grueling 35-year wait, St. Andrew’s coach John O’Connell led the Scots on an improbable Class 3A state-championship run last season, propelling the school to its first boys basketball title.

But can the legendary skipper orchestrate a repeat performance? “Of course, that’s our goal,” O’Connell said. “These kids have a great perspective and understand what it takes. I don’t think there’s going to be a hangover or complacency with this group.

“Having said that, our region is brutal once we get to the playoffs — we can’t look that far ahead. We’ll see how good we are as the schedule moves forward. We have a gigantic target on our back now.”

Adding to the challenge, St. Andrew’s graduated big man Yussif Basa-Ama, who was named the Palm Beach Post’s Best of Preps Player of the Year for small schools in 2019-20.
