Girls Basketball Looking to Build on Last Season's Post-Season Run
The Saint Andrew’s Scots girls basketball team, led by Coach Victor Agapay ‘02, began practice this week as they prepare to defend their 2019 district title.
The Scots return 3 starters from last year's squad, senior Sydney Rieland, junior Dea Canole, and two-time First Team All-County selection, senior, Kayla DeHerrera.
“Kayla sets the standard for our team. She is the engine of our ship. She brings 4 years of varsity experience, and her talent and leadership are immeasurable. Her work ethic gains the respect of her teammates and her opponents. Dea and Sydney have also worked very hard this summer to improve and to add new components to their game, as well.”
In addition to the returning starters, the Scots have 3 new students who will undoubtedly contribute to the Scot’s success. Wing, 5’10” Senior Stephanie Theodossakos, will add a new level of athleticism and versatility to the team, as she can play all five positions on the court. Senior guard Sophia Federico will provide some explosiveness and will help stretch the floor with her 3-point shooting. She is a high IQ player, who can handle both the point and the off guard position. Finally, 6’2” junior Whizdom Williams will provide some much needed size on the floor defensively, and be a low post offensive option for the Scots as well.
Agapay knows the Scots have their work cut out for them but has faith in this team’s abilities. “Our goal for the year is to repeat as District Champs, and hopefully make a run in the State Tournament”.
