Maya Blatt ’23 Inspires and Effects Change by Launching Beads Can Feed

As an International Baccalaureate (IB) and Round Square International School (RSIC) rooted in the Episcopal Tradition, Saint Andrew’s School has students that are no strangers to addressing critical social issues that impact the entire globe. As those who have been engaging with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals both in and out of class understand, eradicating world hunger is quite central to the mission of achieving global peace, universal prosperity, and equity for all humankind. With the daunting task of addressing such a monumental and perplexing dilemma, Maya Blatt ’23 has managed to make an impact by starting with one bead at a time.

Wishing to address global hunger in a meaningful fashion, Maya created her own line of high-end beaded bracelets and necklaces over the summer, selling her fine wares both online and in a pop-up shop configuration. Her venture’s name is Beads Can Feed, which is entirely appropriate and relevant to her cause. The proceeds from her stunning jewelry sales have gone to benefit local and global organizations such as Boca Helping Hands, the World Central Kitchen, and No Kid Hungry. When speaking with Maya during our most recent edition of Community Service Stories, we learned that Maya has successfully leveraged her passions and created a bridge between her unique, artistic skills and her strong desire to help the less fortunate. And while the business began during her summer holidays, Beads Can Feed is far from a summer fling. Maya continues to craft and create even as the school year plows forward. In fact, as is evidenced in the interview, Maya has recently debuted a new collection of beaded jewelry for the fall season, which is sure to keep sales flowing and corresponding donations at an incredibly high level.
