TED-Ed Works with Avery Stark ’21 to Produce New Version of Her Acclaimed Talk
During February 2020, Avery Stark ’21 was one of twelve students who gave her TED talk in front of students from around the world at the TED-Ed Weekend Global Theater in New York City. An updated version of her acclaimed talk, entitled “The Second-Hand Trauma of School Shootings,” was posted on YouTube on September 24 by TED-Ed Student Talks.
The TED talk that Avery shared on the NYC TED stage was emotional and vulnerable. It provided the perspective of being a former student of Marjory Stoneman Douglas and outlined the trauma and its damaging toll on those involved first and second hand. The talk also offered strategies for moving ahead and beyond trauma.
“Presenting on stage in New York City at TED-Ed was exhilarating,” exclaimed Avery. “It was also a great learning experience to work with TED-Ed on the editing process to make the talk even better.”
Avery put in a tremendous effort to present such a personal topic, something so close to her family.
“I never had a student work as hard as Avery on her talk,” stated Lisa Winer, Avery’s TED-Ed teacher. “Not only did she work through several iterations of it, but she memorized it, rehearsed it once, and nailed it on the big day. It was not an easy topic to discuss, but it is an important one that needs to be talked about. I am so proud of Avery and her accomplishment!
