“Individual commitment to a group effort. That is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.” Those words by legendary football coach Vince Lombardi are the cornerstone of any great program.
When Jimmy Robertson was hired to be the Head Football Coach at Saint Andrew’s School, he brought that philosophy with him. “I believe we’ve come very far as a football program since my arrival. Last year we made the playoffs for the first time in 45 years. We’ve had 7 win seasons in 2 of the last 4 years. The culture has changed. The players expect to win, and they all are excited to be a part of the football program.”
A change in culture is great in theory, but without players who buy into it, change is nearly impossible. And it all hinges upon the team leaders. “We have a lot of great leaders on offense and it always starts with the QB. Jeremiah Young is a two year captain and is entering his 3rd year as the starting QB. The offense and the leadership starts with him. We also have Jovan Joseph and Ben Seelye who are team captains. On the defensive side of the ball we have Bill Young who is just a special young man. He is a leader on the field and in the classroom. And Rick Bentivenga, our 4th captain, is one of the hardest working kids on the team. Finally, we have junior Matt James, who is so much fun to watch. Currently, he has offers from 8 Division 1 Schools including LSU, Penn State, and Duke, making him the most highly recruited football player in Scots history. ”
As a contact sport, football has been impacted by COVID-19 more than most, but Coach Robertson has taken things in stride. “I wouldn't say I’ve found it challenging, but it definitely has been different. But, once you are out there training and on the practice field with your team, it all seems normal. Also, having a great group of players is always fun to be around.”
No one knows for sure what the season will ultimately look like, but Coach Roberston, his staff, and the team leaders will have the Scots prepared for whatever 2020 throws at them!
