Cross Country Builds on 2019 Success

The Saint Andrew’s Boys and Girls Cross Country teams had successful campaigns in 2019, but in 2020 the bar has been raised.

While COVID-19 has made it challenging for all sports, including Cross Country, the athletes themselves have barely missed a beat. As Coach John O’Connell explains it, “COVID Training has not been difficult. Half the world took up walking or running for the first few months of the pandemic. Most of our runners never stopped after Track shut down last spring. However, trying to find races is not easy since the parks in Palm Beach, Broward and Dade Counties are not allowing races to take place.”

The Scots girls team is anchored by Ellie Tymorek, a highly recruited senior who starts the year as the preseason #1 ranked runner in the state, and junior Holly Coughlan. “We’ve added some new girls to the team too, and this year, we will be in a position to compete for a district title”, said Coach O’Connell.

The boys team, coming off their 8th straight District Title and a 6th place finish at last year’s State Cross Country Meet, look to improve upon that result as they bring back most of their top runners from last year, and add Senior Matt Mule, a transfer from West Boca High.

“Our elite runners may be stronger than any other year we've had. Ellie has a National ranking of #51 and our boys are really deep. Matt Mule, Ian Noble, Damien Carlsson and Will Romac make up as strong a top 4 as anybody in the state. Tristan Moss, Chris Warren, and Lucas Walsh round out that top seven.”

With COVID-19 travel restrictions still in place, the Scots have not yet been able to face their competition head to head, but both the girls and boys teams are poised to make deep runs into the postseason in 2020!
