Four Saint Andrew’s Students Named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists

Saint Andrew’s School proudly congratulates four members from the Class of 2021 who have been named as Semifinalists in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Competition.
Seniors Nicholas Horowitz, Alexander Kino, Claire Nottman, and Matthew Russo will compete against approximately 16,000 other students for a chance to obtain a National Merit Scholarship this coming spring.
To qualify for a Semifinalist position, our Scots competed against 1.6 million juniors from high schools across the country. These four leading Saint Andrew’s students were among the highest-scoring participants in the state of Florida on the preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT). These scores, combined with their academic record, extracurricular activities, community service, leadership abilities, and awards received are all factored into their possible selection as Finalists.
Saint Andrew’s School is very proud of these students for going above and beyond in their work. “These students have put in long hours to reach the high level they are at today. We wish them the best of luck as they compete for Finalist status and potential National Merit scholarships. Competing for National Merit Scholarships shows just how dedicated they are,” said Dr. Robert Bouressa, Director of College Guidance.
“In the College Guidance Office, our goal is not only to help prepare students for college and lead them in the right direction but also to successfully send them to college knowing that we provided them with the right tools and avenues to have bright futures,” added Dr. Bouressa. “It’s exciting to have these four top students to work with and help lead on their paths to success in college admissions.”
These talented seniors will now join thousands of others across the country to continue in the competition for a chance to be awarded a Merit Scholar title and scholarship. This year, there are some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth a total of more than $30 million to be offered next spring.
National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) is a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance. The organization was established in 1955 specifically to conduct the annual National Merit Scholarship Program.
Semifinalists in the 2021 National Merit Program were recently recognized in an announcement sent to news media outlets nationwide. By spotlighting these Semifinalists, NMSC hopes to increase general interest in academic excellence and encourage broader support for the education of talented young learners. To help enhance their educational opportunities, a list of Semifinalists (by high school) will be sent to four-year U.S. colleges and universities.
We wish our four Semifinalists the best of luck in this year's National Merit Scholarship Competition.
National Merit Scholarship winners of 2021 will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July.
