Alexa Shumway ’22 Takes the Cake As She Bakes And Operates Her Charity ‘Nourishment Equity’
Alexa Shumway has been representing Saint Andrew’s School through volunteerism, using her passion for baking to make a difference in the community. Her charity, 'Nourishment Equity', strives to raise money for food pantry items in support of students up to college age.
This winter, Alexa and 12 other Saint Andrew’s Scots embarked on a trip to the Netherlands to participate in the week-long The Hague International Model UN Conference (THIMUN). Through Alexa’s experiences at the Model UN with Dr. Schipper, she was exposed to the struggle for human rights globally, especially regarding accessibility to food.
“I was inspired to help provide this necessity to my community because I believe that access to nutritious food is a basic human right,” offered Alexa.
“I was inspired to start ‘Nourishment Equity’ after learning about students’ struggles with food insecurity,” she added.
Equipped with flour, sugar, and a heart of gold, Alexa recently put her talent and desire to help others to work during the pandemic. She baked and delivered 500 protein cookies and provided staple pantry items to Gateway Community Outreach in Boynton Beach. She also baked dozens of cookies and delivered them with snack boxes to COVID first responders at the Palm Beach Police Department.
Alexa continues to bake and donate throughout this summer and recently raised money to outfit the interior of a food pantry truck in Tucson, Arizona. Alexa’s effort will help to maximize food transportation from local pantries to schools. SA congratulates Alexa on a job well-done!
A non-profit, independent, co-educational school for grades Pre-K - 12, Saint Andrew's School is a private day and boarding school located in Boca Raton, educating the best students from across Palm Beach County, Florida, the United States, and throughout the world in the Episcopal tradition.
