Izaak Bastian '18 and Lauren Hew '18 put Olympic Dreams on Hold

Izaak Bastian had 2020 visions of representing the Bahamas in either the 100- or 200-meter breaststroke, and former Saint Andrew’s teammate Lauren Hew, who followed Bastian to Florida State, was chasing a spot on the Cayman Islands contingent that would be heading to Japan this summer.

One week after his Tokyo dreams were put on hold because of a worldwide pandemic, Bahamian Olympic swimming hopeful Izaak Bastian had a Saint Andrew’s School flashback, to the man who got him to the brink of the ultimate accomplishment.

“Love that guy,” Bastian said last week from his Nassau home about Sid Cassidy, who has coached boys and girls swimming at the Boca Raton prep school for the past 15 years. “I remember what he did for us, how he cared for us. The dedication and love for the sport radiated.”
