Basketball Wins Class 3A State Title

LAKELAND — High school basketball fans likely are familiar with the names Yussif Basa-Ama and Josh Minott, the talented Saint Andrew’s duo that helped carry the Scots to Saturday’s Class 3A state final.

But with a championship hanging in the balance, Saint Andrew’s senior guard Jack May played “Superman” in the closing minutes against Jacksonville-Andrew Jackson, helping secure a historic win for longtime coach John O’Connell.

Despite being hampered with foul trouble most of the game, May had two baskets and a steal during a crucial stretch, lifting the second-seeded Scots to a thrilling 57-50 victory over the No. 1 Tigers, who made a furious charge before running out of gas.
