On the eve of Veteran’s Day 2019, Saint Andrew’s School proudly recognizes Middle and Upper School Advanced Band and Symphonic Band students and Band Director, Andrea Wolgin, for their honorable musical tribute to veterans arriving on the latest Honor Flight at Palm Beach International Airport (PBI).
On Saturday night, November 2, 2019, at PBI, band members, teachers, and a group of JV cheerleaders, joined a throng of thousands as they participated in Southeast Florida’s Honor Flight fourth and final flight of 2019. The November 2 Honor Flight paid tribute to 8 WWII, 30 Korean War, and 41 Vietnam War veterans.
Southeast Florida’s Honor Flight is a Stuart-based, 100% volunteer organization that conducts four Honor Flights per year. The organization transports local war veterans to Washington, D.C. early in the morning, and then organizes a welcome back ceremony when they return later that same evening.
After leaving PBI at 4:30 am, veterans arrived in Washington D.C. with a full day of appreciation and visitations planned. The veterans visited memorials built to honor their service and sacrifices.
To close out this special day of celebration, 'Operation Homecoming' welcomed back the veterans when they returned to Palm Beach International Airport. Thousands of cheering people lined terminal A/B at PBI. As the veterans deplaned, the Palm Beach County Firefighters Pipes & Drums led the veterans through the procession and out to the welcoming crowd. Once the veterans exited the terminal, Saint Andrew’s Band played their role in the special event.
In a sea of family members, friends, flags, signs, and cheers, Saint Andrew’s band members led by Director Andrea Wolgin played patriotic to honor the processional of veterans.
The Saint Andrew’s School students were so proud to give back to the veterans who have sacrificed so much to ensure our freedom. “We hope that through music, we showed our appreciation, ” said Mrs. Wolgin.
In this season of giving, Scots participation in the Honor Flight was indeed a time of giving back to those who gave to our country.
