This fall, Saint Andrew’s School Athletics officially kicks-off competition as part of the inaugural Palm League. As a member of the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA), Saint Andrew’s views participation in the Palm League as a welcome addition to the overall athletic experience for our teams.
The Palm League is comprised of seven independent and private schools from Palm Beach, Broward, and Dade counties. These schools include The Benjamin School, Oxbridge Academy, North Broward Prep, Pine Crest School, Miami Country Day, Gulliver Prep, and Saint Andrew’s School. Athletic Directors from these participating schools came together last year to discuss the possibility of creating the league to enhance the overall experience for our student-athletes.
Palm League member schools recognize that the pursuit of excellence in athletics is intimately tied to each school’s overall mission. “Each member school shares common values and inherent beliefs about the nature of competition and athletics,” commented Saint Andrew’s Athletic Director, Craig Ashley. Participation in the Palm League enhances each school’s overall educational experience through the alignment of common core principles, including fair play, respect, preparation, teamwork, leadership, problem-solving, and sportsmanship.
“Added benefits of competition in the Palm League is the inception of a ‘Palm League Championship’ as well as plans for increased academic recognition for distinguished scholar-athletes,” added Mr. Ashley.
For the inaugural year, league champions will be determined by teams playing one “seeded game” prior to the end of the regular season based upon head-to-head league play (i.e., 1v2, 3v4, 5v6). Individual sports such as swimming, golf, cross-country, and track and field will compete in a tournament or meet format to determine a league champion. Saint Andrew’s will play host to the first annual Palm League volleyball and track and field championships this year.
Within an atmosphere of integrity and mutual trust, member schools pledge their commitment to the purpose and mission of both the Palm League and the Florida High School Athletic Association. And for Saint Andrew’s scholar-athletes, participation in the Palm League further deepens each Scot’s quest for excellence in athletics, personal achievement, skill development, and fun. Go Scots!
