SA Celebrates Chinese New Years Events and Hosts Gala on Friday, Feb. 8

Chinese New Year is the most important festival in China. It is a day to celebrate a year of hard work, a day for family reunions, and a day to wish for a lucky and prosperous coming lunar year! The Chinese Lunar New Year (The Year of Pig) is on February 5, 2019.

Saint Andrew’s celebrates Chinese New Year throughout the month of February. Chinese New Year festivities began at SA starting on February 1 as Lower School students held an assembly honoring Chinese culture with performances and dancing.

Chinese New Year is also a time when Scots celebrate their triumphs in Chinese competitions. On February 2, students from all three divisions participated in the Palm Beach World Language Day at Boca High School. Students competed against other schools in the county in the areas of Chinese Fine Arts and Performing Arts, Chinese Culture, Jeopardy games, and Chinese speech and declamation.

Both Lower School and Middle School Chinese teams won second place in their respective categories. Middle School Chinese student, Julia Nicholsberg, was awarded the Tula Llanos Memorial Scholarship at the World Language Fair. Individual competition results will be announced in a couple of weeks.

The fun and celebration continued at SA on February 4 as residential students made dumplings at Ms. Hua Zhang's home in the girls dorm to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

The Chinese department has many exciting plans to celebrate Chinese New Year throughout the month of February:
  • On February 5, a special Chinese lunch is reserved for dining halls in all three divisions and dining halls will be decorated with Chinese artwork made by students.
  • On February 8, there will be an all-school 2019 Chinese New Year Gala scheduled from 6:30 - 8:30 pm in Roberts Theater. There will be featured performances from Lower School, Middle School, Upper School, and International Chinese students.
  • On. February 13, a selection of Middle School Chinese students will visit Brighton Gardens to share Chinese New Year traditions with the nursing home residents. They will perform Chinese dance and give them red envelopes made by Saint Andrew’s students.
  • On February 16, residential Chinese students will be cooking Chinese food at Ms. Hua Zhang’s home in the Girls dorm to celebrate the Chinese Lantern Festival for the Lunar New Year.
  • On February 21, there will be a dumpling making event at Assaf Hall in the Middle School for Chinese students in all three divisions. Chinese students will have the opportunity to explore Chinese cooking techniques including dough making and filling dumplings into different shapes, sizes, and flavors.
  • On March 16, the Chinese New Year celebration will culminate with the SAS Spring Break China trip. Additionally, some Middle and Upper School Chinese students will be traveling to Gulliver Schools in Miami to compete at the Fourteen Annual Florida Statewide Chinese Competition.
Happy Chinese New Year! Best wishes for a successful 2019!
