Film is both a powerful communication medium and an art form. Through the study and analysis of film and exercises in film-making, courses in this discipline explore history and theory. Film reveals much about people and cultures; the use of imagery, music, editing styles, and methods of storytelling differ from one country to another, and in some instances, fuse either subtly or overtly. The course develops students’ critical abilities, enabling them to appreciate the multiplicity of cultural perspectives in film.
Students also learn the technical skills necessary to create and produce an original film using equipment in the Video Production Studio. This includes scriptwriting, directing, filming, lighting, and editing. The film may be done individually or as part of a group.
