Day in the Life - Shivanni Grade 11
Before School
I arrive at school around 8:00 am and have some time to sit with my friends near the fountain, enjoy our beautiful campus, and catch up. After this, I head to my first period in the science building across campus.
A DAY
A Block - IB Biology HL Yr 1
Walking into class, IB Biology is an incredible class that delves into a range of topics, from DNA splicing to environmental studies, and is made even more interesting by Mr. Campanaro’s amazing stories about his travels and hands-on biology experiences. It is definitely a perfect start to the morning.
C Block - AP Computer Science A
Mr. Van Voorhis always starts off class with a puzzle, warming up our problem-solving abilities before we start coding. The puzzle is always an exciting way for my classmates and me to start class. During the class, we code our way through multiple problems using different and unique methods (there’s more than one way to solve a problem!).
Club Time
I like spending time with the Latin Club, where we discuss our work for competitions such as the National Latin Exam and the SCRIBO writing contest. In club meetings, we are free to discuss Roman culture and religion to expand our knowledge of Roman history.
I run club meetings for the Science National Honor Society, where we discuss olympiad competitions in different fields of science (biology, physics, chemistry) and occasionally bring in a guest speaker, who is usually a graduate student presenting their research.
E Block - AP Calculus BC
As a math lover and Mu Alpha Theta (Math Honors Society) officer, I always look forward to Mr. McCullough’s Calculus BC class. Mr. McCullough’s method of showing the proofs behind the formula, rather than mindless memorization, deepens my understanding of the topics and inspires me to pursue mathematics in college.
G Block - AP Chemistry
One of the most exciting ways to approach science is hands-on labs, which are a key part of AP chemistry at Saint Andrew’s. Our school’s superior stock of equipment, coupled with smaller class sizes, allows us to each conduct experiments and collect data individually. Ms. Martin’s amazing stories from her time as a chemical engineer also boost the interest of many of us, providing insight into how we can study the subject in the future. I am very grateful that Saint Andrew’s allows us to pursue both IB and AP sciences while offering a variety of other courses to explore our interests before we enter college.
B DAY
B Block - AP English Literature and Competition
I enter the class excited to discuss the newest piece of literature we have read, either a poem or a prose. We have recently started a project in which a different group of students teaches our newest book each class, allowing us to better understand the literature while also adding a fun spin to the class. During this class, I have read amazing books, such as Pride and Prejudice, and have especially started to love Jane Austen’s writing style.
D Block - Resource Period
During my resource period, I take advantage of the 90 minutes I have available to get a head start on my homework. I usually sit inside the library or the quiet space inside Charles and Hagerty Hall (our newest building), but when the weather is nice, I enjoy the free outdoor spaces on our campus, either near the fountain or outside Charles and Hagerty Hall.
Lunch
I love how SAGE Dining offers a variety of dishes from different cultures every day, allowing me to try new meals every day of the week. I especially love the fruit station in the dining area, filled to the brim with fresh, sweet fruits like melons and grapes. I also love the salad bar with many different options and dressings.
F Block - AP Macroeconomics
As I walk into class from lunch, I am always happily greeted by Ms. Da Silva’s smiling face. Ms. Da Silva teaches us in a concise, visual way, always checking in to confirm our understanding. The class is also an exciting way to apply our knowledge of current news, as we sometimes discuss the impact of new policies on the United States economy.
H Block - Honors Latin 3
I always walk in to a warm welcome from Magister (Latin for teacher) and am ready to discuss the latest reading for the class, whether a hilarious story or a question about Roman culture. As I am part of the leadership of the Latin Club, I sometimes take time at the beginning of class to talk to him about upcoming meetings and events. Throughout the class, we not only explore the intricacies of Latin grammar but also examine the rich history of the Roman Empire. These fascinating conversations about Roman life in the olden days and their rich history, which has influenced the modern world, flame my historical interest and inspire my love for the language.
After School
After school, I attend Mu Alpha Theta, our math competition club. As Vice President of Competitions for the club, I help run practice sessions with the guidance of our advisor, Mr. McCullough, and prepare us for the next competition. Having completed one of our best seasons to date, I am happy to see the math honors society growing and reflecting the amazing math skills of our students.
After I leave school, I practice Indian Classical dance, and learn online as my dance school is in India. This past summer, after years of dedicated learning, I went to India and performed my graduation performance in front of family and honored guests of my dance school. In the evenings, I also provide free math tutoring on the LearnToBe platform, which connects struggling students across the nation with tutors.
