On May 19, 2010, David Ahern was recognized by WPEC TV 12 as the Athletic Director of the year for the 2009-2010 school year.
David Ahern has been an athletic director for 26 years and has served as the Director of Athletics at Saint Andrew's School since 1999. At Saint Andrew’s, Ahern supervises 64 high school and middle school teams and over 900 games a year. He has guided the athletic department to five All-Sports Trophy Awards (Best Athletic Program in Palm Beach County); the first was awarded in 2002 (first in school history), and others followed in 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009. In 2008, he was named the US Lacrosse Man of the Year by the South Florida Chapter of US Lacrosse. In 2009, Ahern was awarded the James C. "Bud" Brunk Stewardship Award, given to an individual who “perpetually manifests the essence of stewardship by his ceaseless caring and concern for the people, the campus, and the facilities of Saint Andrew's School.” In addition to his responsibilities as athletic director, Ahern has also coached a number of teams at Saint Andrew's, including junior high football, middle school flag football, middle school boys basketball, middle school boys lacrosse, junior varsity girls soccer, and varsity girls basketball.
Prior to coming to Saint Andrew's, Ahern attended Florida Atlantic University, receiving his undergraduate degree in education, and then completed his Master of Sports Administration at St. Thomas University. Ahern earned his athletic administrator certification from the NIAAA (National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association) in 2001. He served as the Athletic Director at his alma mater Monsignor Edward Pace High School in Miami for 15 years and was inducted into the Pace Hall of Fame in 2001.
Ahern and his wife, Mary, live on the campus of Saint Andrew's School with their three boys, Tim '07, Joseph '09, and Patrick '13.
Clearly Ahern loves Saint Andrew’s School, his job, his players, and his staff. As he says, “Coaches can make or break an Athletic Director, and I am blessed with great coaches.”
Congratulations Mr. Ahern!
