As diverse as the Performing Arts Department is, its mission is singular. The department celebrates its diversity and aims to instill in students the essential skills within the various areas of the performing arts. These essential skills are basically the same in each area: to develop critical thinking, to help students find their level of creativity, and to assist them in the learning process and the understanding of the various elements of design. These skills are used to create effective compositions in all areas of the performing arts, instilling confidence in students abilities and helping students discover more insightful ways of viewing and analyzing their world.
In pursuit of teaching the essential skills, the faculty of the Performing Arts Department is constantly challenged to develop different ways to present to its students the information they need to become confident, creative, responsible, and knowledgeable in the various areas of the performing arts. The programs presented in the areas of drama, instrumental, and vocal music reflect the department's commitment to the challenge of teaching its students. This process begins in the Lower School where the faculty works to provide students with a strong knowledge and skill base in order to facilitate a successful transition to the Middle and, eventually, the Upper School Performing Arts curricula.
The goals of the Performing Arts Department are designed to help students think in a creative manner and expand their horizons. It is important for our students to appreciate and understand the creative endeavors and achievements of other artists. The department is constantly striving to develop students' abilities to recognize and appreciate the arts as a historical reflection of humankind's advancements, values and cultures. The arts easily relate to all the other academic areas; while science, math, and history give us facts, the arts supply the reaction and interpretation of these facts. With the inclusion of the arts, a more complete understanding of reality is possible. This perspective enables students to explain to others why every piece of music or dramatic production is vital as an artistic effort.
The Performing Arts Department works to provide students with challenging opportunities to explore their creative potential while instilling in them an excitement for the accomplishments of others. The department works to instill in students a disciplined work ethic during individual practice and group rehearsals. Many areas of the performing arts require a collaborative effort. Students' development of positive social skills and the means for solving problems in a creative manner creates an important vehicle for life-long learning.
