Lower School Hammond Library

The students in grades Junior Kindergarten through fifth grade have library classes once a week. Students and teachers are encouraged to make use of the library at any time including before and after school hours. Kindergarten through second grade classes are 30 minutes; third through fifth grade classes, 45 minutes. Our goals are to stimulate the recreational reading of our students; prepare them to locate, process, and communicate information in both print and non-print sources; and to fully support the school’s curriculum in all subject areas.
The library uses the reading management program, Reading Counts. This program allows the students to take quizzes upon their comprehension of their independent reading. The children will accumulate points by passing “Reading Counts” quizzes based on individual titles. Each book is given a number of points. Most of the fiction books, many biographies, and some non-fiction books are now on “Reading Counts.” We strongly encourage students to read at their ability level. The idea is to enjoy the reading experience while continuing to challenge oneself to read books that will help you to grow.
